I find that when I am struggling with something in life, it helps me to focus intentionally on why I do it. It doesn’t matter whether it’s my photography or homeschooling, I try to consider the answer when I need a little pick me up.
Generally, I tend to shy away from sharing my reasons for homeschooling. Many people take my reasons for homeschooling as an attack on public schools. That is not my intention, though. Matt and I both went to public school growing up. We have teachers in our family as well. My reason for sharing is because we are in the middle of February, a time when many homeschoolers hit the wall. It is coming around the time for testing and our anxiety goes through the roof. This is why I am writing the reasons I love homeschooling, to help keep me focused on why I do it in the first place.
Being with family is my top reason for homeschooling. I could to spend every day with my daughter teaching her what is important to our family. I love that I don’t miss out on the little everyday things by sending her to a public school.
I love knowing what my daughter is learning. I don’t have to ask every day what they learned in school, because I am their teacher. I know who she talks to throughout the day and the messages she receives in these formative years of her life.
Scheduling is one of my favorite things about homeschooling. I love the flexibility we have each and every day. We have the opportunity to go to the science Museum when no one else is there. We can take vacation during the middle of the year when other children are still in public school. This makes things so nice for our family.
I am able to cater to how my daughter learns by teaching her at home. As she gets older, I am sure her learning style will change some. I will be able to change the way I teach her as well.
Having my daughter home is one of the things I really love about homeschooling. They are young for such a short amount of time, so I want to spend as much time with her as possible here at home.
I understand that homeschooling isn’t for everyone, but it is a great fit for our family. Now, I just have to remember to come back to this list every time I find myself questioning our decision to homeschool.
