Hurricane Survival 101

Home made bread

Hurricane Sandy Survival

People are NUTS!  We couldn't find a loaf of bread anywhere!  We do our normal weekly food shopping on Sundays and this past Sunday the food stores were definitely lacking for choices.  We go through about two loafs of bread a week.  So we needed bread.  Since I wasn't going to get any at the store I just decided to make my own!

Easy Bread Recipe

Ingredients

- 3/4 cups warm water
- 1 packet of yeast
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 1/5 tbs sugar
- 1 tbs shortenings
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 1/2 to 3 cups flour

Directions
- Mix yeast and warm water together.  The water MUST be warm.  Mix until all yeast is dissolved.
- Add all other ingredients to the yeast water except the flour.
- Add in two cups of flour and mix.  {I used my Kitchen Aid mixer to do all of the dirty work}  Slowly add more flour {or use less} until the dough comes away from the walls of the bowl and is no longer sticky to the touch.
- Put dough in a buttered bowl and cover.  Let rise for one hour.
- Remove dough from bowl and punch and knead for ten minutes.  {You can let your mixer do this too}
- Place dough in a buttered loaf pan and let rise for 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
- Bake bread for 30 - 45 minutes or until the top is golden brown
- Remove from oven and turn the bread out of the pan to cool on a clean towel or cooling rack.
